About

Idanha-Detroit Rural Fire Protection District

Idanha-Detroit RFPD is an all-volunteer fire district located along Highway 22 in Oregon. Our district serves the communities of Idanha and Detroit, while also protecting a large stretch of Highway 22.

Idanha-Detroit Fire District is a small rural fire district that provides fire and EMS protection to the cities of Idanha and Detroit, Oregon.

Our district was founded in 1954 during a time of economc growth and development when the community was home to several timber mills.  The community suffered a large population decline after the mills shut down in the 1990's.

The cities of Idanha and Detroit were both originally founded as railroad camps for the Oregon Pacic Railroad in the late 1800's. Some remnants of the old railroad are still visible in the area today.

Idanha was originally called "Muskrat Camp," while Detroit was originally called "Coe."

During the Beachie Creek and Lionshead wildfires of 2020, our firefighters assisted law enforcement agencies with the successful evacuation of hundreds of people from our community. Unfortunately, the town of Detroit was almost completely wiped off the map during the wildfires.

The fires destroyed approximetely 70% of the town, including the city hall where our fire district was housing a couple fire apparatus and our administrative office. One Type I engine was completely destroyed, and a Type VI brush truck was damaged during the fires.

Idanha-Detroit Fire District is a local government that is governed by a 5-person Board of Directors. Our primary source of revenue is generated by property taxes, which brings in approximately $130,000 per year. In the aftermath of the devastating wildfires, our tax revenue saw a drastic decrease in funding. In response to this decrease, our district was awarded a $2.4 milliion grant using funds from the state's Coronavirus Relief Fund. These funds will be used to build a new fire station, which is currently in the beginning phases of planning and land preparations.
